Enhancing the safety, security and efficiency of I-75 in Southwest Florida

  • The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District One SWIFT SunGuide Center provides extensive traffic management and communications services for FDOT and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) incident response throughout Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties
    along I-75.

The SWIFT SunGuide Center coverage area will increase as additional ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) devices are deployed north through Sarasota and Manatee counties.

This 49,800 square foot facility is designated the Joseph P. Bertrand Building, named for the FHP trooper who died in the line of duty in 1967 in Fort Myers.

    • Monitor the highways and respond to incidents as they occur to reduce incident response, clearance and recovery times
    • Coordinate emergency responses to significant highway incidents by dispatching the FDOT Road Rangers and making other agency notifications
    • Coordinate and manage the relocation of impediments to traffic flow
    • Coordinate and request the deployment of FDOT maintenance equipment to help expedite the clearance of major incidents
    • Coordinate and request the deployment of traffic signal technicians for the repair of signal systems
    • Coordinate temporary modifications to the traffic signal timing patterns during road closing incidents to ease traffic congestion
    • Provide timely and accurate incident detection, verification and response for incident management, while continuing to strive to meet the 90-minute goal of Florida’s Open Roads Policy
    • Be the communications source of incident information to the public by communicating with the FDOT public information officers and by operating the 511 system and activating dynamic message signs
